What is Macular Degeneration?
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) causes damage to the center of the retina (the macula). The macula allows you to see detail in the center of your field of vision. If the macula is damaged, you can no longer see detail in the center of your vision.
AMD is a common problem for many people as they get older.
How is Macular Degeneration treated?
Eye Vitamins: A large scientific study called the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS), showed a specific formulation of vitamins and minerals to be helpful in reducing the risk of vision loss in some forms of AMD.
Your ophthalmologist must follow Macular Degeneration closely. You may need special scans to evaluate the health of the macula.
If you notice wavy lines or vision loss, the macular degeneration may be worsening.
When macular degeneration worsens it can progress to "wet" macular degeneration. This term is used when the macular degeneration causes bleeding in the retina. Injection of a medication can be helpful in "wet" macular degeneration.
